Box Score TACOMA, Wash. - Puget Sound became the first team to score before halftime against the Pirates this season, netting two first-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over visiting Whitworth on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth (4-9-1, 3-7 NWC) lost by a deficit of more than one goal for just the second time this season as the Loggers (9-3, 7-2) avenged a loss to the Pirates earlier this season.
The first meeting between the teams this season, a 1-0 Whitworth victory, saw Tiara Pajimola score a goal in the 3rd minute. In the rematch, it was Puget Sound's Amalia Acorda-Fey who flipped the script, scoring in the 3rd minute to give the Loggers an early lead. She scored on an assist from Jordyn McLuen, firing a shot from near the top of the box on the left side and finishing to the lower left corner of the net.
The Loggers added to the lead in the 41st minute, as Acorda-Fey scored again. She netted her second goal of the match from inside the box on a one-touch finish, off a cross sent in from the right side near the end line.
Cassie Winter netted the third Puget Sound goal in the 64th minute. A cross from the left side was sent into the box and stopped by Andrea Stump. However, the ball bounced away just far enough from Stump for Winter to capitalize on the loose ball as she scored from close range. Robin Vieira assisted the goal, her second assist of the match after assisting Acorda-Fey's second goal as well.
Stump made seven saves for the Pirates. The Loggers outshot Whitworth, 19-2. Each team took just one corner kick apiece in the match.
Whitworth will face Pacific Lutheran on Sunday before returning home and preparing to face Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield next weekend.
