Early Goal Doesn't Stand Up in Loss at UPS

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth's early goal would not stand up as the visiting Pirates lost 2-1 at Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Loggers improved to 5-2-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the NWC.  The Pirates dropped to 5-5-2, 2-4-2 and will look to break a four-match winless streak (0-3-1) next Saturday at home against George Fox.

Whitworth was able to pressure the UPS defense in the early moments of the game and the Bucs drew a penalty kick at 1:19, which Jami Hegg converted for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Pirate lead.

Amalia Acorda-Fey tied the match only ten minutes later, completing a goal after she carried the ball for nearly half the field.

Acorda-Fey then tallied the match-winner in the 28th minute from 13 yards away.

Neither team was able to get a goal in the second half.  Puget Sound finished with a 28-5 edge in total shots, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Andrea Stump made seven saves for the Pirates.
